Elizabeth Blackwell was born on February 3, 1821, in Bristol, England. She was the third of nine children. Her family moved to the United States when she was eleven years old, settling in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Blackwell faced many challenges and obstacles throughout her life. As a woman in the 19th century, she was not encouraged to pursue education or a career. However, she was determined to become a doctor. She was inspired by a dying friend who expressed a wish for a female doctor to attend to her.
In 1847, Blackwell was accepted into Geneva Medical College in New York, becoming the first woman to attend medical school.
